Harvest 2016 : a happy ending
With heavy rains, lack of sunshine, frost and hail, the beginning of the season was a disaster for Champagne growers. Fortunately, summer arrived timely : since the beginning of August, the sun and heat finally allowed the grapes to ripen under ideal conditions.
The harvest started on September 17 with a little rain on the first day, but the sun returned very soon and then settled permanently. The Meuniers and Pinots Noirs from the hillsides around Epernay were beautiful, healthy, with a perfect maturity. Chardonnays were surprisingly late, but the maturity monitoring enforced by Champagne Beaumont des Crayères growers helped to postpone the picking at the right moment.
Today, fermentations are ending and the House winemakers are happy. About this years 2016, after a heavy suspense at times, we can truly say that "all is well that ends well" ...
